Vibe Hotel Canberra

No of Rooms: 191
We stayed in: 513 - A First Class Room
With Canberra airport unveiling its new airport space only three years ago and recently announcing its first official international flights to Wellington and Singapore later this year, we decided to see check out the new kid on the hotel block. FlySpy checked in - to check out - the new Vibe Hotel Canberra Airport. We weren't sure what to expect!
Access to the hotel from the Canberra Airport terminal arrivals level was quick and easy and took no more than ten minutes under the covered walk-way. The hotel is only 150 meters away from the terminal building. Let me say from the start, that this Vibe is unlike any Vibe hotel that I have stepped into. This is vibe hotels real attempt to enter the corporate hotel market. The staff are well groomed, polished and professional. I was greeted immediately as I walked into the hotel and my check in experience was faultless. When you walk into the property the first thing that demands your attention is the huge Guggenheim style atrium. And on ground level, the space reminds us of an airline lounge with lots of spaces to work, play or entertain in . The hotels open plan design has a very distinct yet contemporary old boys' club feel to it, influenced by the warm brown and golden hues of the furnishings. The colourful retro furniture and fresh flowers make it look more like an exclusive airline lounge than a hotel foyer. Hidden, in the corner of the space is a very cool fireplace which will no doubt become prime real estate for bar dwellers during the colder months.
There are seven levels of the hotel. Rooms types are catergorised into Lower deck (located on levels 1-3), Upper deck rooms (located on levels 4-5), First Class (Levels 4-5), 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartments also.) In our first class room we had a a small kitchenette featuring a microwave, small sink and a coffee machine.
Our First Class room (1 of the 12) was situated on level 5 of the hotel. And It's from outside the room where you can truly appreciate the architectural features of the hotel. From the corridor looking down you get a birdseye view of the design values that have gone into creating the various spaces.
The room is well designed and appointed. The greatest feature being the bathroom. Modern in design, a double vanity and separate shower(great water pressure) with a stand alone bath. Other thoughtful touches include USB powerpoints fitted which enhance the connectivity experience for the guest. We also enjoyed the fully automatic Vittoria espressso machine with easy to use coffee pods, for that pre-work out or morning meeting rush.
The lighting in the room was good and there was plenty of natural light streaming through the expansive floor to ceiling hotel windows. It was great to have a comfy lounge to sit back and watch TV at the end of the day. Perhaps the hotel could have gone out on a limb a little more with the interior design of the room, but really, that's only a small thing.
The bed is comfortable. There are some really innovate design features in the bedroom. The alarm clock allows you to plug in your own USB so you can wake up to your own music, which we thought was a nice touch. The device allows you to listen to phone calls via bluetooth. The leather style headboard was backlit to provide the room with a little more ambient lighting and blackout curtains are fitted for those that need complete darkness.
Room 513 contained a microwave, small sink, iron (a good one too) and an ironing board. A personal safe was available.
The workspace in the room is sufficient and nothing to write home about. There are ample USB powerpoints on the writing desk with a small reading lamp. Again, nothing spectacular but completely functional. The in-room telephones are connected directly to Virgin Australia and Qantas call centres - a nice touch!
A standard selection was available but to be honest, with a bar like that downstairs, I can't see why you would want to sit in your room.
The Room Service
Available 24 hours a day. We ordered the beef burger and it came to the room missing a couple of extra things we asked for (we call it the mustard test), not a big deal really. It arrived quickly, hot and with a smile and a chatty conversation.
The hotel offers its guest the option of a 'fit' menu for those wanting to be healthy while they're away from home.
We are still in search of a hotel that gives its guest complimentary unlimited wifi during as standard during their stay. The Vibe Canberra offers its guests 500mb per 24 hours. I opted to pay for the unlimited service which cost $9.95 for up to 4 devices. Pretty good price-point, considering what some others have been known to charge.
The Restaurant: 'Helix'
"Helix Bar & Dining is a modern restaurant and bar with a delectable menu, prepared in an open kitchen, with a focus on Australian produce and shared dishes, partnered with regional wines, creative cocktails and a solid beer selection."
The hotel restaurant and bar is called 'Helix', a 'modern - style bistro'. Naturally, the restaurant is open 7 days a week. The hotel serves alight continental breakfast from 0400-0600 then a full buffet breakfast from 0600-1000. An all-day menu is available. Click here for the restaurant menu. The steak sandwich is a traveler staple and definitely worth a try. For the health conscious, the restaurant offers a selection of healthy breakfast options including freshly made cold-pressed juices. For those after a traditional hotel breakfast the hotel offers four a la carte dishes.
$22 per day. The parking is operated by Canberra Airport.
Gym and Activities
A fully equipped gym is available on level 1 of the hotel. The hotel also has an arrangement with eighty8 fitness if you are more interested in a personal or group fitness session (for a fee)
No tennis courts (can be arranged via Eighty8 fitness for a fee)
The wall-mounted television was a standard size and retractable to an extent. Guests can use the TV to check their bill. You can also mirror an i-Pad or other device onto the TV. There is also a great selection of cable channels.
We think: It would be great to check flight arrival and departure information from the room although departure boards are available on the ground floor of the hotel.
There is an in-house yoga channel for those who need to 'contemplate'. There is also a menu catered for those wanting to stay healthy while they're away from home.
To be honest the hotel was very quiet on this Saturday night so we couldn't really say whether there was any noise from other rooms. But we will let you know if we hear anything!
Corporate and a government employees during the week and families on weekends seemed to be the general crowd. It gets very busy when parliament is in session.
Did the experience extend into the room?
We think it does. We appreciated the little touches such as the USB ports through the room. This hotel is a game changer for the Vibe brand in terms of its product offering. We hope that we will see more exciting innovation from this hotel brand.
Why stay here?
To be honest, the proximity to the airport is very appealing for business travellers who can use the hotel just as they would a meeting room in an airline lounge. Its a great base and not just for business travellers. This hotel has a lot of character and we will definitely like to revisit it again.
The hotel is also offering some great deals with breakfast. Check these offers out here and be sure to join up to the loyalty program to get 10% off the best available rate.
Would we stay here again? Yes, without a moments hesitation.
